Self Care II
Basic Bodywork for You & Your Partner
Cupping & Gua Sha
A follow-up to the Self Care I workshop, this session introduces you to the age old therapies of cupping and scraping (gua sha). These methods of bodywork predate written history, and developed independently in cultures all over the world. Both are still widely used today, because they are easy to learn, very safe to practice, and remarkably effective treatment methods.
Cupping is the therapeutic application of negative pressure (vacuum). When applied to the body, the vacuum gently lifts the underlying tissue. The result is increased blood & qi flow, and the removal of toxins & tensions. We’ll be using some really wonderful squeeze bulb cups from the Ukraine – these cups are easy to apply and a joy to use, both on yourself and your partner.
Gua Sha is a technique where the surface layer of the body is ‘scraped’ (gua) with a smooth edged tool, to release and dissipate stagnant blood and heat (sha). Jar lids, coins, specialized tools made from jade or water buffalo horn…practically anything with a rounded edge can be used. We’ll be using ceramic Chinese soup spoons.
